Having chronic asthma, and being seriously ill with it as a child, as an adult I looked for a sport I could do under my own terms. I found this in hillwalking and, despite taking double the upper recommended times in the guidebooks, have (with my tenacity and at a snails pace) climbed all of the Munros (Scottish 3000ft+ mountains) all of the Nuttalls (English and Welsh 2000ft+ mountains) and a shade under half the Scottish mountains between 2000ft and 3000ft. In all I’ve climbed over 1340 British hills and mountains, with the breath intake of a seventy year old man.
I did my final 100 Munros in one summer and organised it as a sponsored walk - raising a shade under £3000 for the National Asthma Campaign.
I have published my walking diaries in two volumes (The Munros: An asthmatic’s walking diary and Walking it Through: An asthmatic’s walking diary). I sell these via Amazon at cost price, hoping they will inspire others that you can achieve, despite the limitations and misery of asthma. My Munros book got to number 4 in two Amazon categories and Walking it Through topped one Amazon category.
I also developed the HAMASmith mapping software which I distribute for free. This allows hill walkers and mountaineers to plan their walks, knowing the classification of each summit. I hope it inspires others to get out there and enjoy the hills and mountains of Great Britain.
